Instagram displays feed posts inside fixed-width containers. The recommended size for a square post is 1080 x 1080 pixels at a 1:1 aspect ratio. This is the format Instagram was originally built around, and it still performs well across all devices.
If you upload a larger image, Instagram scales it down to 1080px wide during processing. That extra resolution adds file size without improving display quality. Uploading at exactly 1080 x 1080 skips that scaling step and gives you the sharpest result.
Other Instagram post formats
Square (1:1) is not the only option. Instagram supports three aspect ratios for feed posts:
- Square: 1080 x 1080 px (1:1) - works across all placements
- Portrait: 1080 x 1350 px (4:5) - takes up more vertical space in the feed, increasing visibility
- Landscape: 1080 x 566 px (1.91:1) - good for wide scenes and panoramas
Portrait posts at 4:5 cover more of the screen on mobile devices and tend to get higher engagement for that reason. If you are optimizing a single image for reach, 1080 x 1350 is worth testing.
File format and size limits
Instagram accepts JPEG, PNG, and WEBP images. The maximum file size is 8 MB per image. JPEG at 92% quality and 1080px dimensions is typically well under 1 MB, so file size is rarely a problem with feed posts.
PNG files keep transparency intact in Filagram, but Instagram converts all images to JPEG after upload. If you need a transparent background visible on Instagram, you need to composite it onto a solid background color before uploading.
