How to remove an image background (free)
Background removal used to require Photoshop skills. AI has changed that. Here are three methods, from most controlled to most convenient.
Method 1: Photoshop (most control)
Photoshop's "Remove Background" button (introduced in CC 2020) uses the same type of AI model as dedicated tools. Find it under the Properties panel when a layer is selected, or go to Select > Subject, then invert the selection and delete.
For complex subjects like hair, fur, or objects with fine edges, Photoshop's Select and Mask workspace gives you manual control to fix what the AI gets wrong. Adjust the Edge Detection radius, use the Refine Edge Brush on problem areas, and set Output to New Layer with Layer Mask.
This method takes the longest but produces the best results on difficult images. If you're doing one-off product photography or portraits with complex backgrounds, it's worth the time.
Method 2: online upload tools
Services like remove.bg, Adobe Express, and Canva process your image on their servers and return a PNG with the background removed. Results are good on simple subjects (people, products on solid backgrounds). Most offer a few free uses per month before a paywall.
The trade-off is privacy: your image leaves your device. For personal photos or stock imagery it's usually fine. For confidential product shots, internal documents, or anything sensitive, think twice.
Free tiers also typically limit resolution. Remove.bg's free tier gives you a 0.25 megapixel preview. If you need the full-resolution result, you need a paid plan.
Method 3: browser-based AI (fastest, private)
Browser-based background removal runs the AI model directly in your browser using WebAssembly or WebGL. Your image never leaves your device. Processing takes 2–5 seconds on a modern device. Output is a PNG with a transparent background.
Quality is comparable to upload-based tools for standard subjects. The limitation is that you can't manually refine edges the way you can in Photoshop.
This is the best option for most use cases: no account needed, no file size limits for personal use, and no privacy concerns.
Method comparison
| Method | Speed | Quality | Privacy | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photoshop | Slow (manual) | Best (refineable) | Local | Subscription |
| Online upload tools | Fast | Good | File uploaded | Limited free tier |
| Browser-based AI | Fast (2–5 sec) | Good | Local, private | Free |
Step-by-step with Filagram
- Open the background remover below.
- Drop your image onto the drop zone, or click to select it. JPG, PNG, and WEBP are supported.
- Wait 2–5 seconds for the AI to process the image in your browser.
- Preview the result. The transparent areas show as a checkerboard pattern.
- Download the PNG. The file has a transparent background and is ready to use in any design tool, website, or document.
Getting better results
AI background removal works best when the subject has clear contrast against the background. A person in front of a plain wall: excellent results. A person in front of a cluttered background with similar colors to their clothing: expect some manual cleanup.
If the edges look rough, try the original image at higher resolution. AI models preserve more edge detail when there are more pixels to work with.
